Frequently asked questions
As you’d expect, Pointers are often asked the same questions. We don’t mind, we love to chat and quite often a simple query can lead to a quite different conversation. We would much prefer you to come and talk to us but if you’d rather not, here are answers to some of the most common questions.
Where is the Cathedral?
Although it’s a huge building, visible from a long way away, you can’t actually see the cathedral from the Market Place. However, with our handy map you will easily find your way up Saddler Street and Owengate onto Palace Green.
Can we visit the castle?
Yes, although it’s a student college the castle is often open for guided and self guided tours. We always have up to date information on tour times at our Trike in the Market Place.
Where’s the nearest toilet?
From the Market Place (on weekdays and Saturdays), the nearest toilets are in the Market Hall, upstairs by the café. It’s best to check the list on our map or website for the nearest one for you.
Where is Marks and Spencer?
Sadly the city centre M&S closed a few years ago, so you’ll have to travel to the Arnison Centre just outside the city (bus no 64). However, there are lots of other shops in Durham, as well as a thriving indoor market, so stay a while longer.
Who is that man on the horse?
The large statue in the Market Place is the 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, Charles William Vane Tempest Stewart. His widow, Frances Anne Vane Tempest, commissioned the Milanese sculptor Monti to create a statue of her husband in his Hussars uniform for the centre of Durham following his death in 1854. We have more detailed information about him at our trike in the Market Place.
Where is the river?
When you’re in Durham Market Place the River Wear is all around you! It flows in a big loop, or meander, around the castle and cathedral, making their location a perfect defensive site in olden times. Pick up a map from our Trike in the Market Place or download it here.
Where can I get a good cup of coffee/ vegetarian meal/ take my dog inside the café?
We have dozens of lovely cafes in Durham and the Pointers maintain a detailed Directory of them at our Trike in the Market Place, with details of facilities for each.
