Accessible Durham

We cannot change the geography of our city but we do our best to help all visitors navigate the city in comfort.

A hilly site on a peninsula was ideal for keeping out unwanted visitors in medieval times, but can make Durham tricky to navigate today. This page covers…

The cathedral bus

Arrival in the city

  • Walking into the city on foot involves steps, but is largely downhill. There’s a bus (No. 40) to the Market Place and Cathedral, or taxis are available. Please click here for bus timetable

  • The coach drop-off point is situated at the Radisson Hotel Waterside. Between Easter and October Pointers meet coach passengers (if booked by the coach company) and will give you specific advice. The cathedral bus (No. 40A) leaves from a stop just by the coach drop off and goes to the Market Place and Cathedral. Click here to view the timetable

  • Most car parks are multi storey. Visit the Durham City Council Car Parks website for more infomation.

For blue badge holders, on-street parking is free.

Lifts

From Freeman’s Place

Opposite the Passport Office on Freeman’s Place is a lift that will take you to Millennium Square with a short walk to the Market Place and the cathedral.

From below the Market Hall

There is a lift at the back of the Market Hall that will take you up to the market, café and toilets or down to Freeman’s Place and Fowlers' Yard.

Lifts in car parks

All the indoor car parks have lifts but note that the lift outside the Gala theatre is for the Walkergate car park only.  The lift between Freeman’s Place and Milliennium Square is situated past the library and the Ask restaurant, through the doors at the end and then to the right.

Shopmobility

Shopmobility is situated on the ground floor of the Prince Bishops car park. You can hire wheelchairs and motorised scooters.

Exploring the city

There are some beautiful walks around the riverbanks in Durham and Durham Pointers produce a leaflet called Walking without Steps which you can download here or pick up from our Trike in the Market Place.
